Sailing instrumentaion

I have two. I use one for the wind and one for all the other data. They're incredibly flexible in how you can set them up so you can pretty much have whatever you like on screen.

Yes i think 2 is the magic number

Then an mfd.........

The electronics will be worth nearly as much as the boat!

I think a sneaky removable system is in order where the old instruments magically reappear just as i am selling the boat!

So why is triton better than raymarine i70?

Well I got mine at a similar price to Raymarine equivalents, why have Raymarine when you can have B&G? I don't like Raymarine kit, it's down to personal preference. I find it overpriced and not as reliable and robust as it should be, but that's just based on my personal experience.
All I can tell you is that the B&G's are really excellent displays, very clear to read and very flexible indeed.
If price was an issue then I would be giving Stowe a long hard look, their stuff is pretty bombproof in my experience.

The transducers are stowe! But i am a sucker for the new flashy stuff! I have an nmea databox from stowe so i have nmea out, so will get an actisense thinggy and build an nmea 2000 network

This must be a common situation and it is surprising that nobody makes a fexible large display for displaying NMEA0183 &2k.

This has been the subject of a very lengthy discussion/thread which ran and ran with great hope and optimism until the thorny and tricky issue of a suitable waterproof housing stalled the whole thing completely. SHAME:-(

Yes so the choice seems to be £800 for 2 tritons or equivalent or £800 for an mfd!!

Hmmmmm

A decent sized good quality plotter such as the larger touch screen Garmin ones with sounder capability will I think give you most of what you are looking for,and should be pod mounted at the helping position. I never understand why some folk like to tuck them away down at the chart table. The wind might be a problem. We sail with Nexus wind instrumentation, but I still prefer to glance up at the hawk on top the mast and also see what the tell tales are doing. Most plotters can be set up to provide what info you wish to see around the main chard display. If people really feel a need for a plotter display at the navigation station then they can put a repeater unit there. Hope this helps, it works well for us.

My boat is only 28 feet. Mainly used for racing at the moment, some more long distance cruising coming next year. So down below is covered by a pc - opencpn - vmh charts. Tiller steering so cockpit instruments need to be above the companionway. I don't think I will be able to see a chart plotter from the helming position, so big numbers are the way forward there!!

The mention of Stowe above made me look there and I found one display that almost fits the bill in a simple way.

£318 plus vat.

My issue is that I paid to get the wind instrument refurbished, the dataline box fixed and an nmea box. So I have already ploughed a lot of money in to this system.

Im just not sure i want to put more money in to equipment that i cant reuse on another subsequent boat

I lean towards B&G really because they do claim to be the only significant manufacturer of electronics specifically aimed at sailing.
Indeed their current owners have deemed that Lowrance and Simrad will look after the fishing and motor sectors leaving B&G to maintain focus on sailing.

My question therefore to any current users of modern B&G gear is, are the sailing specific features worth it ?
