Good afternoon all,

Well I have just thought what have I done as Cowes week is coming up but am I am sure it will be fine up here but lets see if someone here can help!

I have recently moved up to Scotland from London. I used to do most of my sailing around the South Coast and mostly out of Hamble.

Does anyone know of any good sailing schools in Scotland I would imagine the best sailing is on the west coast out of the Clyde but I may be wrong and there may be some on the east coast. If not sailing schools marinas where I can assist in crewing. I have heard of a place called "Port Edgar" near Edinburgh but am not sure what sort of boats they have there.

If you can help please do as I have a few months off work and do not want to be on land for all of them!!!

All the best and thanks in advance,

James

The west coast gives a lot more variety than the east. GReat Yachts Clubs and folks at P Edgar and Granton (or up at the Royal Tay, Dundee) but much more going on in the West. Try contacting the Clyde Cruising Club (0141 221 2774). They will help you find crewing positions on boats for their passage races and cruises. Alternatively get up to Croabh Haven this weekend and try to get a berth for West Highland Week. Croabh, Oban, Tobermory..... you'll be reluctant to go back South again. May next year, you should be aiming to do the Scottish Series based in Tarbert. There are always peeps looking for crew and they'll tell you which schools, charter companies etc are around and which ones are good.
Another option is just to go to the marinas (kip, largs, rhu) and ask around about getting some sailing or try the main yacht clubs: Royal Northern & Clyde, Royal Gourock, Farlie YC.
Two tips: Breathable Oilies & good thermals

You will not go wrong here on the Clyde, I have sailed out of Troon for the last 25 years and the Clyde is hard to beat. Also here at Troon we have 3 sailing schools, Maritine Connection, Second Wind sailing and gael sail. It would not be correct of me to point you in the direction of one as I know them all and all will do a good job. If you need more info PM me.

Regards, Paul.

The drying harbours in Fife etc have a special charm, but, to be honest, the west is best. By a long chalk IMHO. The Clyde, the west, and the north, are truly outstanding sailing areas.

Visit Troon, Largs, Dunstaffnage etc, check out the marina and club notice boards.

Enjoy!

You don't say where in Scotland you're going to be. If you're near Edinburgh, here's the Port Edgar link-

If you are on the west coast, then there is the Clyde and/or the western isles. There are lots of opportunities on this side. As to Schools, I would thoroughly recommend Second Wind at Troon. I have done a fow courses with them, and Steve is an excellent instructor. See his web site here = http://www.secondwindsailing.co.uk/ No connection, just a very satisfied customer.

There are a few marinas in the Moray Firth. Lossiemouth, Whitehills being the main ones. I'm based in Peterhead, so if you're up that way soon, send me a PM and I can take you out for a sail if you like.

Welcome to the forum (and Scotland)

Dear Jimbo
You have not revealed your new location in our fair country but wherever you are you should find sailing waters and hospitable clubs on both East and West coasts.
You will also find that costs are considerably less than the South Coast and it will be possible to find a berth.
The West (Clyde and Inner and Outer Hebrides) offer uncrowded anchorages, spectaular sunsets and MIDGES, East coast sailing is more rugged and requires a lot of forward planning but no nasty biting insects . Your choice but welcome to Gods Country anyway.
