Has anybody ever sailed in Cyprus (more interested for the south Greek part)? Either sailed there from abroad or chartered a boat and sailed around the island? What are your comments?
Thanks

I am based in Limassol. As far as I know there is a charter base in Larnca belonging to Vernicos yacht (www.vernicos.com) and chartered boats from them in Greece several times. Or you can charter a boat from local RYA school if impress the owner.
No problem to come from abroad (except Turkey), but the nearest Greek place to charter a boat is Rodos (around 300 nm).
You can't actually sail around the island - either you can sail along greek part or along turkish part, but you can't cross marine borders and go from one part to another or you lose your boat.

Never been on turkish part but heared it is very nice, but have no idea about shelters. On our greek part there are only 3 marinas (Larnaka, Limassol, Latchi) and may be 2-3 more or less good anchorages.

Marina places are few and far between... Larnaca being the biggest with a waiting list for berths. St. Raphael Marina is West of Larnaca at near Limmasol. There was a new one being built near Paphos... I have no up to date info. There are possibilities with some local knowelge in the small ports such as Akrotiri, but beware as customs entry is only possible in the main ports.
Although things are more relaxed vis-a-vis crossing the border these days, sailing round the island would be at risk. Landfall in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus would mean not getting back into the Republic. Girne is the main port (formerly Kyrenia) which is pretty but crowded.
A good spot to meet up with local yotties is the Famagusta Nautical Club, not in Famagusta but in Limassol. It has the best value food in town with dinghy sailing from the garden.

Sounds like a bloody good reason not to go anywhere near the place - they need to get the Greek/Turkish thing sorted out, although I'm sure it's not a simple as that.

We were there on holiday in July 2006. Everything felt incredibly expensive, (approx 30% more than UK prices), and, whilst nice enough, nothing special enough to tempt me back.

We were on the NW and W coast, (Flew into Paphos, and stayed somewhere N of there, over the hills, beginning with P. Medium sized marina nearby. Paphos didnt seem to have much available for visiting yachts, (not much for local ones either), and didnt see any sign of a new marina.

There are boats for charter here, I'll post some contact nos later. I'm based in Larnaca and have sailed the south coast and also anchored in the north on my way to Turkey, but you cannot land. Look but not touch. Although all the berths are full there is an outer wall at Larnaca, and sometimes on a berth if the boat is away.

Larnaca charter tel: Andreas on 00 357 99586486 he has 3 skippered and 2 bareboat he also knows the other boats available. One for Richard you must have stayed in Polis. The marina at Latchi has been extended but again fully booked, during the summer berths are available whilst the owners sail the Turkish coast.

That was the place - in a hotel on the beach a bit out of town.
