Rye is about the only place I would describe as lovely between the Looe and beyond Dover. Never been to Sandwich, it does get a lot better as you round the toe.
One of our club members gave an account with pictures of his trip to Sandwich in his Hunter 32. It did look interesting. I can't see it ever becoming a cruising Mecca but it could make a change for the intrepid.

There are interesting places such as Rye and Sandwich, neither of which I have sailed to, but even places like Dover have their attractions. The Dover Straits have an atmosphere of their own, especially on a fine day or after dark, with the Continent just over the horizon and ferries plying their trade. As a stop, Dover is a bit inconvenient, with an awkward trudge to the shops, but the castle is a must-see and walks on the Western Heights well worth doing. If you are lucky, you might even get the chance to visit the Grand Shaft which is only open one Sunday per month I believe. Everyone loves Ramsgate.
Rye is well worth a visit if you can take the ground up at Strand Quay. And the Drop Redoubt on the Western Heights above Dover Marina is interesting and out of the wind if you are gale-bound there.

Thanks for all the advice & interesting snippets. We crossed the Chichester bar at HW-4 with a tide of 1.72m on a very light wind/sea. No problems.

A nice sail to Littlehampton with some fair tide. Entered Littlehampton at HW but windy - a touch lively for a first entrance. Accompanied by dolphins across the bay.

The only visiting yacht at Littlehampton.

Now in Shoreham for a touch of industrial grit!

Cheers
