Sailing dilemma; Baby on board

That's odd. I can't see the lifeline or the flotation device. What do you do to avoid dropping your precious (and very cute) load as you climb aboard?

Edit - I should perhaps have declared an interest. My first grandchild is due in August.

When mine were ickle there was only one lifejacket available for babes called a cosalt crib. Particularly horrid and overpriced. I believe there's something else available now. About time.

There's also a tiny harness you can get for when they're crawling. Worth making up a lighter lifeline tied direct to the harness - adult ones are rather heavy.

Great photo!

Thanks for the inspiration and just reminded me that there is a child car seat in the charity shop in Dunoon.

Freestyle just asked the most pertinent question of life jackets !!!!! I have seen (in Compass for example) some childrens lifejackets viz...

Wonder if she can wear it and fit in the car seat ???

Donald, this lass is being set to chase Ellens record /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Hope to eventually meet you this year.

No problem with strapping down but think in advance how you would unstrap in a hurry if you had to.

Baby lifejackets aford quite a bit of support so see if you can pack baby + jacket into a bike seat. Strap that down & make sure the quick releases on the baby straps are OK.

And Julies reminder of sun cream is so obvious now she has said it. The E-Boat is (in my opinion) like a big dinghy so spray hoods aren't really an option.

Your biggest problem will be rigging a sunshade. Full sun and babies don't mix even with sunblock. We never did solve this. The clip-on parasols for prams won't stay up in any kind of breeze.

We did have a backpack baby carrier that had a cover on a wire frame that worked well. You could maybe make a similar thing for a car seat?

Full sun seldom a problem on the Clyde /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But got my thinking head on and will report back on anything I come up with.

By the way, loved the blurb about the above childs life jacket ...

"Top safety features include a large collar and soft PE closed cell foam filling to support a helpless child even if damaged."

Hope not to damage my baby, she is out of warranty /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Don't be fooled by absence of visible sunlight. I have only been badly sunburnt twice. The first followed a overcast day on a boat off Durban. The second followed a day skiing when it never stopped snowing.

Can't help but have been reading with interest as I took my first born out on the boat for the first time yesterday at two day's old (born on sat 24th). He didn't seem to take much interest but I believe in starting them young. am I pushing this a bit??

Good luck!

(god I need more sleep....zzzz)

We sailed all last year with a 3 year old and 1 year old twins. We do, admittedly, have a very slow old wooden boat with a small rig and a wheelhouse but our 2 best things were safety netting on the rails (a thread about this on here very recently) and netting on the bunks in the fo'csle to put the twins in when it got bumpy, hectic or too tiring (for them!). We'll see what it's like this year with a 4 year old and 2 year old twins...
