I have searched, but probably not with the right words

I am looking at what is the best way forward to gaining recognised qualifications for sailing

I have a lot of experience with power boats, but not sail boats

Am I right in thinking I should do the day skipper theory, keep a log of hours using my boat, then take the day skipper (or Yachtmaster coastal)

Is there another way.do any courses include the 100miles 5 days sailing etc to get the day skipper ( and therefore ICC)

Any places in Scotland that will take the training with your own boat?

Regards

Sounds good to me.... I suspect that the issue might be the sailing v boat managment... Might I recommend some dingy lessons before doing any practical.

The usual way to get a Day Skipper ticket is to go on a five-day course living on the boat and learning as you go along. There's no test as such. At the end, assuming the instructor is happy that you're not a total numpty, he gives you the DS certificate and (possibly for an extra fee) the ICC. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to just do a short test and get a Day Skipper - the certificate is a "course completion" certificate, not a certificate of competence obtained by passing a test.

You can do a half-day ICC test, but that's unrelated to Day Skipper and has no prerequisite requirements (though you probably wouldn't pass if you'd never sailed a boat).

Thanks Pete, planning on my theory in next couple of months, then hoping to go to Gibraltar for Xmas break and do my DS there. Was hoping the 5 day courses counted towards your logged hours. Will still have time to log a few days on my boat in between, taking a weeks holiday through the canal at the end of this month

Did my OND Maritime studies when I was 17 at Fleetwood, but never took the exams, still know my deviation from variation though. Used to learn in Lasers in the docks.

They do count but miles are not really taken into account they are just suggestions as to what you should have done before.
