Hi All

I posed on here about six months ago looking for advice for both my wife and myself on beginning to sail at the ripe old age of 55 and got some great feedback.

We decided to book a competent crew and VHF course in Spain mainly because we didn't want to be put off by the British weather and after meeting "go-n-sail" (formerly Mar Menor Sailing School) at the Southampton bnoat show we decided to book a five day course to see if we liked sailing enough to push ahead with our plans.

We have just got back from the course and what an experience! Firstly I do not think you would find two people more knowledgeable or dedicated than the instructors Debbie and Shane. An added bonus was that they were also great company. Throughout the course, nothing was too much trouble to explain or go through for the umpteenth time. Another big plus is that they will only take on three students at a time. It was mainly centred around Cartagena and Mazarron in south east Spain.

The five days includes staying on the 37' Jeanneau which is immaculate and all meals are provided.

It has cetainly been the kick start we were looking for and having got home we are striving to get our own boat next year after going out there again for the day skipper course. I really can't recommend them highly enough.

Cheers, Ron

Is this an advert?

Is this an advert?

What a crass comment! It's no different to the "advert/s" I post for a sailing school in Lagos - which aren't adverts!

What's wrong with posting about a good experience when you've had one? - we are very quick to post about bad experiences.

What a pair of stupid bloody comments these are! Is praise for good service no longer allowed?

Here's my original post if you are that interested:

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum. I've been around American car forums for decades and certainly didn't expect rubbish like this so maybe I should just go and crawl back under my stone.

Ive known Shane and Debbie for a long time, see them a couple of times a year if they are passing by Gib. Glad you enjoyed your time with them, a lovely couple!

and try and get some tidal experience your proberly need it

Nice to see sensible and encouraging replies after the stupid ones!

Yes this is what we plan to do. The competent crew course done in the Med was more or less for us to find out if we enjoyed sailing and also not to be put off by UK weather. The result was that we enjoyed the sailing far more than we expected so plans are in motion with immediate effect.

We will do the day skipper course with the same company in the tidal waters around Ayamonte but we want to do that shortly before we get the boat so it's still pretty fresh. When we actually get it we will probably act as crew to sail it to the Canaries for the winter.

To get it we have to sell either a rental property that was put up for sale as soon as we got back or a couple of 60's Mustangs but these have to be finished first so whichever way it's not going to be quick. Where it ends up is all down to when it it bought but regardless we are in for some big life changes - can't wait.

Cheers, Ron

Well done on completing the course. I'd suggest having a go at a course in the UK at some stage as well now that you know you love sailing. The weather can actually add to the fun and will better prepare you for offshore surprises. It may also give you confidence that you could keep a boat locally and enjoy it more than a couple of weeks a few times a year. Looking at your other thread you seemed concerned that 55 was too old but it's been my experience reading the forums and meeting various forumites that people having regular adventures (big or small) on a boat seem a lot more youthful. Don't forget there is no rule against doing the same course twice, and you could even go up to coastal skipper to add another week of experience in between training and buying. There are many forumites looking for crew too...

Whatever you decide to do I hope you have a great time doing it.
