I have a 120SE saildrive that uses Synthetic Gear Oil

Having just reinstalled it following the change of the gator, I naturally checked the oil level after a run.

With the engine still warm, there was a distinctive "hiss" as I unscrewed the dip-stick.

The level is correct but I'm always a bit concerned about water ingress into the saildrive given its design. Is is usual for gearboxes to build-up pressure? Should
this settle down when cold?

Please let me know

If the oil level was correct it doesn't seem likely that water has entered. Can't say I've ever unscrewed the dipstick on mine when the thing is hot - as it's a sealed unit I guess one might expect the air at the top to have expanded and therefore cause the hiss?

Mine always hisses when I unscrew the dipstick after a run. I assume it is simple expansion when it's hot. It's 10 years old and still hssing so I assume no problem!

There is a pressure build up in the saildrive box. Its normal. That is why overfilling can be disasterous

If heat build up is cause of the expansion, then closing the when hot may well cause problems with water getting as the internal will will drop as the hot air colls.

Might be a good idea to close it only after it has cooled.

Avagoodweekend......
