I've recently purchased a Bavaria 38 and need to antifoul the saildrive leg. I notice by walking around the yard that some boats with this installation have highly corroded drive units whilst others of the same age seem to be able to sustain an almost "as new" finish.

Has anyone got advice on the appropriate coating to keep the latter.

Volvo reckon you should not use any copper based antifouling anywhere on a boat with a saildrive.

I’ve ignored this for many years BUT I do use an aluminium compatible antifouling on the saildrive leg itself and on the hull in the area around the leg. I haven’t noticed any problems with this.

As Dipper rightly says, don't use anything with copper in it or the aluminium in the leg will react with the copper, and the aluminium will come off worse. Hempel make a good a.fouling called Alu-safe, I have used it for several years on my sterndrive.

Im trying lanolin (the raw stuff) this year on the saildrive and prop. I got it from the guys that sell the proprotector stripper. If it is as well engineered as the stripper, then I have hopes of success

preventing corrosion

don't use a copper based antifoul as various people have said, the stuff i use is grey and i think called mpx from international. having made sure of that, the way to avoid corrosion is to keep the anode ring in good condition. change it when 50% eroded and never let antifoul get onto it.
