Saildrive anode ID

Well, that is the question. The boat is new to me and I have never had a saildrive. All the old documentation says Volvo 120S but I suspect it has been replaced since this and that is a red herring. I have an old anode on the boat but it is a complete ring (likely for a volvo 120S) rather than a 2 part and you need to remove the prop hub to get it on. Since I did not remove the prop hub to get the spent anode off I suspect this is also a red herring. Of course I misplaced the old anode

There should be an ID plate on the saildrive upper gearbox

Then it is a 120. Unlikely to be replaced, but if it was then would have been like for like. This was fitted to all Volvo engines from the late 1980s to 2005. The anode is the same for all of them except if you have a rope cutter fitted (which you do not but would be wise to) when you need a slightly modified one. Both are widely available but suggest you buy a genuine Volvo one.

Surely if the old anode was in two parts it is not a 120 ?

This is what is confusing me. It looks, to my eye, like a bigger gap than the anode for the 120 and the old one came off in 2 parts. In fact you can see the holes, in the picture, that I suspect the anode was connected to. It is just a pitty I misplaced the old one. We have been replacing a lot of the deck, rewiring, refurbing deck hardware, installing heater and modern electronics etc and so there are bits everywhere. When I am down at the boat I will get a look at any ID on the leg.

You are right. It is a 130 saildrive, not a 120. If the engine is post 2005 it is the correct drive fitted from new. If a pre 2005 engine then only the drive has been replaced. I did this on my old boat because the 120 drive was no longer available (in 2011) but the reduction ratio is different so requires a different size propeller from the original. A boat the age of yours would indeed originally have had a 120 drive.

None of this has any impact on the anode though. You need the 2 piece one.

Split ones, by the looks of it, so 130 and after. The way to find out for sure is by looking at the type label at the top of the saildrive gearbox (inside the boat), which will tell you exactly what model you have, and then looking up the anodes on marinepartseurope. Then buying matching ones at a third party supplier :)

Thanks guys. It is a bit of a puzzle when you are away from the boat and wanting to order the anode asap
Chatting with you has made my mind up. I will buy the 130 style anode and just take the hit if it is wrong. At least then there will be minimal delay. I think the engine was replaced in 2006 (?9) but there is nothing in the documentation (nice volvo penta book but not filled in with date etc).

Although the prop does not have to be removed to replace the anode it is a good idea to take it off at least every other year and greasing the splines

Definitely a 130 then as it replaced the 120 in 2005. No risk buying a 2 part anode.

While you are taking the prop off to grease the splines next year, suggest you fit a rope cutter.
