We got to Cherbourg too, at 2200 Saturday. Made contact as requested, awaited the offered visit, fully prepared to turn round and sail to Portsmouth for Sunday PM, but no-one arrived.

So we had a sleep, a breakfast, and went home to Shoreham.

Good spinnaker reach to start, unlike the way there, when the wind was on the nose most of the way....which is why we were a little late.

Friday, I was on one tele and two radio shows.

The lack of support was frustrating.

Perhaps I just don't belong to the right clique. Perhaps it shouldn't be about cliques. I feel very demoralised.

Where were you?

The two Sail8 peeps were up at the marina office, on and off, the Supertaff guys were there most of the day and we pulled in about 18:00 on Saturday evening.

Genuinely no clique involved and really sorry to have missed you.

Unfortunately there was one issue with the marina itself, namely the notification had been made to them as Make Poverty History, not Sail8...it seemed to cause a hell of a lot of confusion.

Re the lack of support..

Perhaps they were worried about all the crap (but not as bad as Finnish) food they would have had whilst on your boat....

Not to mention the high risk of catching mad cow disease.

Well done for trying.

Of course this only serves to publicise the problem.

Trade is no doubt the way forward.

I have no knowledge of the area from a sailing point of view but how often do people cruise the coast of west africa ? I would feel that it was somewhere to avoid , but is that the case ?

Sail8 was always going to be a bit of a longshot especially given the added dimension of suitable sailing conditions. I have nothing but admiration for those of you who made the trip and it is sad that the result was not as you would have wished.

Re: Sail8. Us too, but...

I'm very glad that you made the effort and sorry to hear abt the lack of support. As others have said with a little more organisation and a better day for sailing the result might have been spectacular. But take heart, if MPH was easy it would have been acheived years ago, it isn't and needs persistance on all fronts to acheive the goal.

The fact that the topic has been raised and debated on this webboard means that more people are aware of the issues. I used to be skeptical about this and am now convinced that it is worth spending time and effort on and my change in attitude was aided by the discussion here.

10/10 for effort and you have my admiration for joining in.
