My son has taken a place on this boat after being contacted, I think through some crew-seeker type web site. He phoned me from Shoreham this morning and said that the boat looked brilliant and he was looking forward to the trip. £20 per day for food etc. is hardly a commercial rate and if I was not taking wife and eldest daughter plus boyfriend away next weekend I would have gone on the boat myself. I do not like commercial folk using this web site but this is a classic boat going to a large international meet and I would have thought most Classic Forum users would approve of the post. It will be interesting to hear how my son's trip goes.
OK, then. Since this is a commercial offering, here are a couple of commercial questions.
A) When was the last MCA Coding Inspection done; what were the recommendations made in respect of Category and equipment; and which - if any - of these have not yet been carried out. Specifically, is the vessel Code-Approved for passages outside the English Channel e.g. south of Brest?
B) When is the next inspection due?
C) What are the qualifications of the Person In Charge? What are the qualifications of other Officers - if any?
D) If you intend to take children under the age of 16 and/or vulnerable adults, are all relevant employees CRB vetted in respect of Standard Disclosure?
E) What insurance cover in respect of Public Liability does the vessel carry, what is the Certificate Number, and which company is it with?
F) When does this cover expire/become due for renewal?
G) When are the mandatory liferafts next due for servicing?
H) When are the mandatory lifejackets next due for servicing?
I) When are the mandatory fire extinguishers next due for servicing?
J) Are you a Limited Liability Company, and if so, what is your Registration Number?
K) Are you Registered for VAT? If so, what is your Registration Number?
If you are going to use this forum as a free billboard, while others would expect to pay commercial rates, you can expect some searching commercial questions.
You are, of course, free to choose not to answer these legitimate 'safety of life at sea' questions..... However, they're unlikely to go away.
BTW, I note you display both the MCA logo *and* the RYA 'TickMark' logo on your website, indicating that your venture is Approved by the former, and that you are also a Recognised RYA Training Provider. Who is the RYA-Approved Chief Instructor?
Are you quite sure that both these organisations have approved in advance your use of their 'TM' logos in your advertising, and your borrowing the status that they confer?
I didn't object to this original posting & it seems to have appealed to several people. However, I was interested in the commercial questions so clicked on the link to his site.
From this it looks as if the yacht is MCA coded for working in the channel, and the skipper has an RYA Yachtmaster Commercial so his qualifications are okay for chartering. Don't know about his crew though?
I think the RYA would be displeased about the use of their tickmark. As far as I am aware this is reserved for RYA recognised training establishments and should not be used for charter work. He is not an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor as far as I can see so is unlikley to be an approved school. Even approved schools should not use the RYA mark to advertise yacht charters - only RYA courses.
Don't like to be nit-picky like this but it does cost us recognised establishments a lot of time and money to fulfil all the requirements so that we can legitimately display the tick.
When you get back, Guy, perhaps you had better remove the RYA tick if you haven't got their approval to use it, eh?
Like you, I'm more than happy to encourage folk to sail on all sorts of well-found vessels, and I do encourage friends to 'sign up' for interesting trips.
However, it's a responsibility to be a wee bit vigilant and to think perhaps a little more carefully than in past years. We've had a number of unfortunate incidents where inadequately-equipped vessels and inadequately-qualified skippers have put trusting others at hazard - and that's not good for anyone.
I get the feeling that, from his replied, the owner/operator of this vessel is willing to be a bit cavalier about the accepted Rules of Behaviour expected in this forum and elsewhere, and consequently may be quite willing to bend or ignore 'The Rules' in other, more important circumstances. That puts me on notice to ask rather more detailed questions than otherwise.
Having met a few shysters over the years, I don't believe in 'blind trust' any more...... Trust has to be earned.
On a sort of related issue does anyone have a link to the full details of the loss of the 'Cabin fever' ship (damned if I can remember her name but I'm sure she was a topsail schooner) that was lost on the north coast of Ireland a few years ago when she hit a rock?
