Sail Washing

I have been having my sails professionally washed every two years. They are not actually that dirty - though perhaps a bit creased and I wonder if a pro wash is really necessary. I could just lay them out on the lawn and wash them with a hose?

Are there specific benefits to a pro-wash? Are there recommended detergents [anti- mildew treatments that I could safely use] if I do the job myself?

Honest question (ie. not being smartar*e!) but why do you have to wash your sails so often????

I've always taken the view that every time you use a detergent (however gentle) on a sail you shorten it's lifetime... as a result mine are fairly grubby, but not overly so, and I can live with them for the longer life....

I always understood that it is salt in the fabric/stitching causing abrasion that is the reason for washing -apart from any cosmetic considerations. So just wash them off with a hose (if allowed!) on the lawn ....or even just unfurl them during the downpoor that looks imminent here right now
