Sail slug detached from sail

I’ve had a sail slug pull off the sail - the attachment point has broken (see photo). What’s the best way to re-attach that doesn’t require a sailmaker?

Local sailmaker advised me to attach slugs with bungee cord when near reefing points.... Hope that helps.

Seems like good advice. What knot wouldyou use to tie the bungee?

Can't quite see what's happened...

But if it is just stitching gone, sew it back again.

If the tape itself has gone, replace it with some similar weight material and restitch.

If you use the same holes as the original stitching, it won't be too difficult.

But you need a sailmaker's palm, and some needles big enough to take some heavyweight thread. You'll probably break one or two. And possibly some pliers to pull the needle through any tough bits

Thanks for that. Any websites you can point me to that explain how to stitch this sort of thing? I completely wouldn’t know where to start!

Not really!

Just copy how the other slugs are fastened as best you can. Just going round and round through the existing holes would do some good.

Do check the reattached slug will move up and down the mast slot without jamming before rehoisting the sail in earnest.

And if you are doing the job on your lap, try not to sew your jeans to the sail.

Try a long strip shackle if you don’t want to sew it .Be aware of the offset between sail luff and back of the mast .
Best to keep it the same so it doesn’t get more strain that the slides either side .
A short length of polyester webbing wrapped around the slide and through the oval hole in the batten box a couple of times and sewn through, Is the usual method .

Ask around as a fair few people have industrial sewing machines ? Could do that in less than 5 mins ?
