During the winter I strip all the cruising gear and upholstery out of my boat and change my sails for an old ropy set .

This allows me some limited sailing and extends the life of my good sails. The winter sails being fairly tired need repairing quite frequently Which I have been doing with sailmakers palm needle and thread.

Ihave heard that patches can be glued on .Does anyone know what glue and where I can get it from?

Common all garden Contact Glue ......

If you have sail material that cannot take solvent glue - then copydex - used by upholsterers etc.

you can get mylar and dacron sail repair tape. the bloody moths always get at my 505 sails during the winter so i just put a bit of tape on. i think the moths also don't like the smell of the glue on the tape as the holes always end up as far as possible from the tape.

Sail Repair cloth

It comes ready self-adhesive with a peel off back.
I get mine from my sailmaker and cut it to shape from the roll. You can get all sorts of colours.

If I do need to stick untreated sailcloth together I use cyanoacrylate, but it does take the flexibility out of the cloth.

Sail Repairs

You can get proper weight dacron cloth, which makes permanaent, immediate repairs - far better than spinnaker tape which doesn't stick very well and is far too lightweight.

I don't think chandlers stock it but you can get it from either Soromap, Bainbridge International or Contender all do it to my knowledge.

If you want names, addresses and tel nos send a PM.

Won't be answered for some time 'cos I'm off to Praha for about 2 weeks.

Glue choice ...

One good reason to use Copydex or Contact Glue ..... is that the sailmaker when valeting / repairing a sail can actually get the patch off and do it properly when time comes. With Cyano - no chance !!!!

The Sail-tape really is designed for lightweight use such as spinakers etc ..... I've used it to repair allsorts of genny blunders etc. and it always seems to end up ugly after about 6 month !!!!!

Re: Glue choice ...

Yes but my repairs are permanaent. It's only necessary when I need to hand-sew a ring which has pulled out due to inadequate pressing.

You're not quite right about tape - you're thinking of spinnaker tape which is, I agree, pretty useless.
I'm referring to the stuff most sailmakers use for patching, before sewing the patch.

The narrowest roll is 1.2m wide and I'm surprised you aren't aware of it, even though you'll never see it in a chandlers.

Re: Glue choice ...

Thanks to all for the advise.

Ill see if I can buy a bit of the self adhesive stuff from the sailmakers. It would be handy to have aboard anyway.

Re: Glue choice ...

You are quite right, sticky sail cloth is great for repair work and good to keep onboard for emergencies. It is still worth putting a row of stiches round to ensure it doesn't catch on anything and come adrift however the stiching is much easier as everything is held in the right place. Never paid for any yet, sailmakers normally giva away the offcuts you need to encourage a return visit when a new sail is required!

Tape ...

I know of the commercial stuff .... I was really commenting based on what most will find at chandlers etc.
