If you never race, is there any need for a number on the sail?

I ask because I am getting a new mainsail and don't know whether or not to put on the number.

Cheers

Your choice. Clearly need one if you are racing. Useful additional identification on other boats. Many boats have their class insignia and sometimes sail number from the builder. However there is no consistent practice of numbering boats in a class so it is all a bit meaningless.

Yes, an emergency in a crowded area the sailnumber may get you saved much sooner! If you're a member of the RYA the issue of a number is free.

When in the 1970s Devon Council started charging the same harbour dues for Ilfracombe as Dartmouth/Salcombe, even if you were anchored off, and there were no "facilities" at all provided, I was pleased to have no number on the sail or name on the boat. Could almost see the harbourmaster (aka 9 am to 5 pm pier car park attendant) jumping up and down in frustration on the pierhead - he didn't even have a rowing boat as harbourmasters launch. Before the huge hike in fees I always used to pay.

When I raced the "boat with no name" I lashed a painted number board to the shrouds.

When I first got my sail number, I spread the mainsail out on the sailing club floor and applied self adhesive letters and numbers. A long sail batten gave me a straight edge and beer mats for spacing - easy. Just remember to bone the letters down for best adhesion, in my case the back of a spoon from the club kitchen did the job.
