May sail has a sail number and an emblem although I am not sure whether either are appropriate for my boat. How can I validate whether my sail number is correct for my boat? Also, how can I check if my sail emblem is correct. It's a kind of an 'm' with a squiggle from the end of the last foot of the 'm'? My boat is a Newbridge Virgo Voyager.

It sounds like the right sail and emblem. Try Googling for images of Virgo Voyager and you'll see a number of them. As to the sail number, it may be possible to find a hull number either on the boat or maybe with any documents that came with the boat. I'd suggest you visit the owners association website and see if they can help you. http://www.newbridge-owners.org/virpio-04.htm

It is quite possible the sail number is the only record of the "number" of the boat. Prior to 1998 it was not compulsory to keep records of hull numbers, nor identify individual hulls, so sail numbers were issued by the builder in sequence. You may find other clues in the fabric of the boat - numbers painted on panels etc. The yard may well have kept some form of internal record, but as most yards of the period are no longer in existence the records may have gone. As suggested the owners association is probably the best source of information.

The sail emblem is the astrological sign for Virgo.
There may also be Newbridge boats own emblem on the sail as well
