SAIL NUMBER

I BOUGHT A SEAWOLF 26 WHICH HAS A NUMBER ON THE SAIL. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THE NUMBER BELONGS TO THE BOAT OR IS IT REGISTERED TO A PREVIOUS OWNER AND IF SO, SHOULD I REMOVE IT. IF I HAVE INHERITED THE NUMBER CAN I PUT IT ON A NEW SAIL. YOUR COMMENTS WOULD BE WELCOMED.

Hi Pat, and welcome. If the sail number you have starts with K or GBR followed by 4 letters and a number, then it's a national number (as issued by the RYA) and the boat should have a piece of paper issuing that number. If it's a shorter number, say 3 digits or less and appears under the class insignia, then it's probably the build number of the boat within the class. This from the RYA website:

"If the owner sells the boat on, except in exceptional circumstances, the sail number remains with the boat and details of the new owner should be passed on to the RYA Technical Department with the appropriate registration fee. Sail Numbers will be in the form of GBR four digit number with a suffix of Y, L, T or N e.g. GBR 4567T. Multihulls will be given a suffix of M".

The RYA registration fee is currently £26 but free to RYA members. This re-registration is not required for a 'Class' number.

Either way, I think you're pretty safe to put it on a new sail.

One tip Resist any thought about removing the numbers or letters. You will probably end up with areal mess. that glue is hard to remove and attracts dirt if not removed. olewill

Goldie has explained the numbers issued by the RYA but the original number and insignia for the Seawolf are illustrated here:
http://www.cobra-seawolf.com/Library/seawolf_26.pdf There were apparently only 50 moulded. If thats true then the nunber will be no higher tha 50.

The SW number relates to the boat and not to the owner. If that is what you have then no further worries, it basically identifies the boat.

Do you mean 4 numbers & a letter? Never seen what you diescribe on a sail.

thanks for the advice--the number was y and 4 digits although I had no paper on it when I bought the boat.I will try to contact the RYA for advice
P.S. this is an excellent site and very interesting to a new sailor like me
