I am trying to establish the build year of a Cobra 750 yacht . The sail number is 154 and I have no documentation from the original purchase. Can the sail number be used to establish the year? Can anybody help with the year. I have tried the Cobra & Seawolf web site but to no avail. The yacht also has a SSR number.

Regards - Phil

HIN / Sail No and Year of build ....... this is a hairy subject as many builders do not number their boats till they get sold ..... out from builder factory / storage. Bavaria is a prime example ....

The only yards that you can say confidently DO number in accordance with actual build are the yards that only build to order.

Finally Sail Number is unreliable unless it is issued by the builder as there is no requirement for the sail number to tally with any thing except take reasonable care that it is not already used by another. That is FACT ...... some time ago I wanted to trace the sail number of my boat - as it has no logo / number on the sails at all ..... I was told by Builders that "put what you like mate .... check up with authorities if you don't believe us ...." So I did as best I could and it was confirmed.

If it's new enough to have a modern HIN (in the format GBABC-12345-A303) then the last 2 digits tell you the model year and the 3rd+4th from last tell you the hull mould date

The letter is the month. So J304 would be an October 03 hull mould, 2004 model year boat

If it doesn't have the new style hIN then I dont know what to do

We haven't found a hull ID number on our Cobra and the sail number is random.

We were told that ours was built in 1983, but we've no way of knowing whether this is correct. Even if you could get a manufacturers build date, it may not relate to the date that the boat was finally finished and launched, as a lot of the Cobras were home finished. I don't think that ours was launched until after 1987 as that is when the engine was bought.

Re: Sail no. & year??

Hi Phil, It is possible to get an "historic transcript" from the small ships register, cost I think is £5 along with acompanying letter. Our 850 is No 167 and is circa 1979/80. The cobra/seawolf website has been defunct for a couple of years now, which is a shame as it was very usefull.
best of luck
