Sail makers scam.

I have heard that some small sailmakers overcome the problem of being snowed under with work at peak times by ordering sails from the larger manufacturers ,which come to them without makers identity marks,

They then put their own badges on them and the unsuspecting buyer thinks he has a hand made sail and is supporting the local buisness.

If this is true I think it shady practice to say the least.

Anyone had any experience to confirm or deny that this goes on?

...you mean they do just what every other manufacturer does??? See discussions on 2.5 Tohatsu....

I do understand your point though

I was told by a south coast chandler from whom I had just purchased a new genoa last year that this is what they do. He would not mention the sailmaker but he was pointedly tapping their catalogue on the counter with a 'nudge-nudge,wink-wink, know-what-I mean' look. The source of the sail did not bother me at all, quality and price were more important to me.

How does a hand made sail differ from the other sort.

They are all cut from computer generated patterns to optimise the direction of weave and economy of material, stuck together in the loft and sewn by machine.

There isn't really any other way.

Re: Sailmakers.com

The sail you get may be perfectly adequate but it isnt what you ordered. You ordered a hand made locally produced sail.

If you wanted a mass produced sail you could probably have got it cheaper by going direct to the producer.

The comparison with engines is true but All engines are mass produced. So you knew what you were ordering just not which badge it should have.

I try to support the local economy by using local chandlers etc when possible, this rebadging of sails is a bit underhand in my opinion.

Re: Sailmakers.com

Hi,

I would have thought it was also illegal to re-badge a product as something else. If you buy a sail made by "X" and in their sales literature and contract it doesn't mention the use of sub contractors then it is mis-representation.
