Ahoy collective. Have an ambition to spectate the SailGP in Portsmouth on weekend of 19/20 July, but from the seaward side rather than on land. Anyone know / anyone provide guidance on where to drop the hook? I’ve checked the harbour master’s notice and seen the exclusion zone. I’ve also checked the SailGP website and seen the diagram with (matching) exclusion zone and the predicted race course within it. SailGP have “bring your own boat” tickets for other venues, but not Portsmouth, but there is no other guidance. In the absence of anything else, current plan is to head for Spit Sand or Horse and Dean Sand and anchor there. Am I missing anything? Anyone do it when the circus was last it town?

I like the way they've already decided it will be a South Westerly...

I have it on good authority that there are no special areas for "VIP" craft etc, so basically the rule is as long as you are outside of the exclusion zone, which will be policed, and obeying all other local bylaws etc help yourself.

We're planning on being there, but I'm not planning on anchoring. Simply don't have the ground tackle for that. Suspect we'll take turns driving race by race.

We took our RIB up for the AC warm up event there, was it 8 years ago? The area is thick with anchored craft, and people milling about, some of them had been celebrating very hard. Even in the RIB we had quite a hard time staying out of the way. We won’t be doing that again, there’s just not enough attention to spare for the racing. And I would not, under any circumstances chance Chiara’s gel coat there.

We will go and have a look with our rib......just try and keep out of the way I guess................Thanks for posting the two pics.

Thanks all for info. We’ve now altered plans to go in a rib sized powerboat, and float rather than stop. Top sides will be bristling with fenders…
