Sail Drive Diaphragm

Bavaria Ocean 38 - Am going to change sail drive diaphragm and wonder if it is necessary to move the engine forward. I have plenty of room aft of the bell housing to work - engine MD22P 60 hp with S120 drive.

Make a note of my post - there are not so many of us 38 Oceans out here.

You will need to move the engine. Be sure to block the space under the sump to save a collapse, but the bearings should be large enough to take the small amount of movement needed.

Drop the oil from the S leg in advance; you have to do that anyway so better loose the weight at the outset.

The rubber flap on the underside should not need replacing. It's a bit of a bother if you decide to replace it; best left alone if possible.

Big tip - whilst the leg is out, and on a precautionary basis, replace the seal at the end of the crank shaft - it's a press fit and not expensive, but a bummer to deal with if it fails between replacing the gaitor every 7 years. When it fails oil leaks out into the aft end housing and there's nothing you can do to stop it - except replace the bearing! By dismantling the whole S leg gear agin...!

Some folks replace the seals at the prop end of the S leg on a precautionary basis. Mine are the originals and 10 years old and still good, so maybe yours don't need replacement yet - if there's any contamination in the S leg oil, any streaking, the seals have to be replaced pronto.

The total job takes one long day - 8-9 hours. Don't let any engineer try to stitch you up for a 2 day job! (been there!)

I am currently in the process of changing ours. Make sure that you have a replacement seal before you remove the saildrive. Reason being Volvo "forgot" to reorder and since Christmas there have been none available in the UK. I have had a call today to say that mine is now in stock but most of the Volvo agents that I have spoken to over the last two months were suggesting that they had already sold their allocation.

For me panic is now over and I shall not have to put the old one back in after all!

If you have a friendly volvo dealer and you need parts on back order. Just ask if they can raise the order as Commercial Fishing Boat Parts. You will get the parts within a few days where as if you raise an order for a private vessel the parts could be on back order for weeks !
