As Jack Frost has slowed progress on my boat building I have taken to doing some searching for parts on the internet infront of the fire.

Can anyone recommend a supplier of sailcloth. I guess they are about but it is difficult to google it without sail makers popping up.... and yes I am considering making my own sails so if you have any advice.....

I would also like to use some classic looking fittings (its only an 18' day sailer similar to a Lugger) so if anyone has some good recommendations for suppliers again it would be appreciated.

Have you thought of Tyvek (aka roofing membrane)? Don't laugh - there are several websites showing how to make sails from Tyvek and double-sided tape. It may be a way to go while you get the hang of cutting and shaping the sails.

I seriously thought of trying to make a cruising chute out of the stuff, but then thought that a patchy blue and black sail that said "Jewso" on one side and "ns" on the other might make other boats laugh /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

(And anyway I got one off the forums for £75)

most sail cloth that sail makers use comes from kayospuce in farham thay on the web and very good have used them lots

I have been doing a fair bit of research on the web and came across several articles on making sails from Tyvex and whilst they were quite interesting it wasn't the how can I say this politely...not quite the image I had in mind /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A very good website and I would guess company is sailrite in the US. Huge amount of materials and information including videos and well worth a look. Unfortunately with the £ going south they probably aren't the cheapest at the moment.

I also came across a free program called Sailcut CAD which designs, sails, huills and rigs. I entered the information on my mizzen very quickly and easily and it produces the panel dimensions, or drawings, for you to cut the sail cloth.
