I asked Saga for a quote for boat insurance, gave them details of boat and mooring location etc. They came back to me yesterday and said they couldn't give me a price because they were not familiar with my boat's mooring location. Do they only insure boats in marinas or what?

I have had a similar experience with them. They weren't familiar with my type of boat ( for that read 'didn't have it listed on their computer') and could not identify with my Norfolk Broads mooring. They appear not to be able to cope with anything which doesn't appear when they press buttons in the office.
Don't be surprised if they call and mail you next time your renewal date is close - they've done that for the last four years with me!

Ive been insured with Saga for last 3 yrs. If their boat insurance is as good as the car or home contents I shouldnt have a prob. Had a claim on car and house, both dealt with excellently.

I asked them for an online quote on 5 occasions this year and didnt receive a single reply. There loss not mine.

I believe their policy is underwriten by Navigators. Just give Navigators a bell - its a really good contract, especially if your boat is over 10 years old.

And they know the mooring areas well, and will tell you if they are prepared to have you overwinter on one.

Same here, with them 3 years never had a problem with, though as yet I have not claimed.

I've had their car insurance for the last couple of years and had expected their boat insurance to be equally competitive but was disappointed. I'll give Navigators a ring tomorrow - thanks for the tip.

mooring location

I am with Saga (also 3 years) and the reason they need to your mooring location is for the theft cover. I am in the EXE whicc is aparently a high risk area and presumably thats why I cannot have the boat on my mooring Oct-Apr unless it is in continuous use.
No problems with them so far and if your boat is "of a certain age" and not worth a large value they dont require a survey which is a saving in itself.

I asked them for a quote a couple of years ago and found them more restrictive than other firms when it came to cover for single-handing.

A few years ago, I had such a good quote to insure SWMBOs car from Saga that I asked them to give me a quote for mine. The reply came back 'I am sorry sir, we do not insure toy boys', it made me feel so young!

:D

The quotes I have had from Saga for boat, car & house have been outrageously pricey. They only seem to cater for rich pensioners . . .

I've not found them expensive on car insurance in fact were less than AA when I renewed this year. They were also cheaper by far than our renewal of house insurance, however, when we advised Direct Line that we were going to swap, they suddenly reduced our renewal by nearly £200! I was all for swapping anyway on the grounds that DL had tried to rip us off but SWMBO persuaded me to stay with them - she pays the bills anyway.

nothing to do with winter storms then

I was with Saga a few years ago, but left them out of convenience when they were a bit finicky about the survey on my next (used) boat. Other than that I found them faultless, including their handling of a claim, when they were hugely supportive. It's true that they're not good for singlehanders. My policy explicitly exluded solo night passages (which, come to think of it, was another reason for changing).
