He is 18 months old, a human tornado - you know the type. We have secured his car seat to the cockpit bargeboard. We would like him secured within the cockpit area. Any thoughts on harnesses, life jacket, etc.
Yep, the crewsaver childrens lifejackets... There are some at about £70 (seababy 150N) and some at c£50 (supersafe 100N). The £50 ones are fantastic, and do the job perfectly a good secure D ring on the back for either holding by hand or as we do with a normal harness line. They are comfy and they can sleep in it as the foam behind the head supports them. Crutch straps good too.
Be careful if you do buy as they have changed the design as of Feb/March and the new ones have inporved crutch straps that you dont have to thread.. they have ruckstrap clips.. and they have velcro inside the zip rather than old style laces..
Overall its much quicker to put on so torpedo doesnt get as stressed! (as my three year old is)
Definately a lifejacket (with harness and crotch strap) and I would recommend Baltic, my little lad has been saved more than once by that brand and I would trust them again and again.
Make sure you don't pay vat, some peeps may forget that they are not chargeable. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif A 100 Newton version should be less than 35.00 quid.
I'll second the Baltic suggestion - the baltic plus harness works well for our two year old although I am not sure he particularly enjoys being clipped on until he is distracted enought not to think about it !
Hope it never happens but I am reminded of the story of the German youth training skipper who padlocked a trainee to the wheel, the vessel went down before they could find the key!
This was my son's first dinghy sailing experience at the weekend:
(Crewsaver)
When we first got it for him he didn't want to wear it, but now we have to hide it to stop him wearing it to school.
Last year, we clipped his life line on to the cockpit ring, and he would then stand against the leeward lifeline, whooping, grinning and trying to go for a swim. This year (now 21 months old) I hope to have him pulling ropes, and maybe steering now and then.
Yeah - all these pictures of small people in boats - where they should be! Can you explain why none of my now grown up children liked boats? I didnt force them on board. In fact, two of them never went on the first one, and none of them apart from a day visit in the marina, went on the second one, nor on the third one. I've bred a family of landlubbers. Yet I took to it from age six, including being seasick.. They don't have/want/like animals either, as grownups. Maybe I've bred a load of cuckoos, instead. Oh, some of them like travelling, writing and teaching, so something has rubbed off. Phew!
Definitely aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh for the kidlets here.
