I'm doing research for my University Dissertation about safety equipment available to yachts. I would be grateful for anyones views on this topic. Anything would be useful from what you use, is it adequate, is there anythingyou feel strongly about. Thanks for your opinions.
 
Retitle it "Emergency" equipment - the best safety equipment is probably the brain followed by a sound hull and warm clothing.
 
Your topic is too broad, and many of the people who contribute to the forum may be too polite to say that they don't want to write your dissertation for you.

There is a vast archive, and a quick search will give you plenty to work with. I would suggest that if you want to get a response you identify something you think is an issue and then do a post which sets out the issues as you see them, and invite comment.

Just a thought.

Suggest you are more specific and identify the different emergency kit and activity available/recommended, understand them and refine your questions so people can be more helpful as it's a BIG topic with lots of angles.
 
Possible to argue that almost everything on a boat, from the kettle upwards, is emergency equipment.

But one thing that gets my goat are flares which have a three year shelf life, so like it or not, they have to replaced when the odds are that they are still 100% effective. Grrr.

To give you a quick start, here are a few categories to think about:

... and don't carry any fuel on board, or indeed take it anywhere near rocks, or have any crew in case they fall overboard, or indeed go out of the marina in case you get flattened by a ship or get struck by lightning etc. etc. etc... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

OK, since you asked - the biggest ripoff going

Danbuoys where the weights and buoyancy are held on with sticky tape...

Lifebuoys that you cannot get into...

Lifejackets where the gas bottle unscrews itself, with spray hoods that don't work...

Fire extinguishers that emit a feeble dribble of powder...

Liferafts that don't inflate (concentrates the mind wonderfully. that one)

Radar reflectors that don't

One could go on for hours.

Remember - the dead don't sue (unless there are witnesses!)
 
Small liferafts for inshore use and small enough to be stowed on smaller yachts would be good. They have been available in the past but now only the genuine offshore jobs are advertised.

VAT shoild not be charged on safety items.

Some marine radios are total crap and have no place on a boat (will PM names of regular failures if you want.)
