A man fell from his "boat" in Darthaven Marina, Dartmouth, last night and was eventually found near the harbour entrance. He was picked up by the RNLI Dartmouth ILB but died later in Torbay Hospital.

And the MCA man interviewed whilst draped over a chair gave a complacent sounding description of how hard it was for them to search for the poor sod with all those boats on the pontoons.:(

Ouch, sounds like Hypothermia to me, altho it could have been drowning but death not confirmed/certified until admitted to hospital. How was anyone alerted to the incident I wonder? Did it happen in daylight or at night? I suspect the marina would not be staffed at night.

You might be surprised at the number of fishermen that have been in the harbour, obviously because we are scrambling about from boat to boat. Even if we wear a LJ all day, (I do) it might be discarded in harbour, which is a bit silly.

Years ago I managed three dowsings in a week, two in one day. I went forward past the wheelhouse one morning and the handrail came adrift, over I went. Spent the next few hours in the engine room and dried out, more or less. That evening I made an over optimistic leap from the quay and grabbed the missing handrail. End of the week I treated myself to a new full length oilskin smock, and was congratulating myself on being dry as I stepped from one boat to the next: my new 'skirt' wouldn't stretch far enough and I let slip an unladylike word as the waters closed over my head once more.

Brixham RNLI said the guy was showing friends over his new boat and he slipped over the side. The tide was running fast and he was downstream very quickly.

A very sad reminder that marinas can be as dangerous as anywhere else.
