Breathalysers almost unheard of here. "Not in our ordinances" the Ch of Police told me. They do what is called a sobriety test on land, (walking a line, putting finger on nose or other daft things) then cart you off for a blood test if you can't find your nose, but I think afloat they take any evidence of drink as breaking the law. Considering there are more boating accidents and deaths in Florida than anywhere else in the US, it's prob not a bad thing.

Having the odd beer or two is part of the relaxation of boating! I have to say though I never have so much that I am pissed or even feeling like light headed. I would like to think that boat owners are so much in love with their vessels that they will do anything in their power to avoid damaging it. Its just another example of BIG BROTHER breathing down our necks yet again. Why is it that every government official wants to take care of me when I have been doing it very well myself for the last fifty years!!! I'll tell you why, its just another excuse to take money out of your pocket!

Barry - IMHO, it's all a question of probabilities: it's more probable you'll have an accident after consuming alcohol and it might not be you who is hurt. I don't think that in this case it's anything to do with BIG BROTHER, it's commonsense.

A usual, its the irresponsible few that foul it up for the many.
Up here on the Thames (and Ive also seen it on the Wey Navigation) one of the hazards to be avaoided is jack-the-lad's boys weekend/week/stag do afloat. Invariably on the biggest hire boat or narrow boat they can lay hands on they can and do terrorise the average friendly boater with their antics and have been know to put themselves at considerable risk as well.
My fervent prayer late in the day as they are heard approaching is usually something like......'Please dont let them stop here.......'

I think the case of a powerboat driver giving it some large out of Lauderdale around 5 years back is enough to scare any one off serious drinking and driving.

From what I can rememebr came out of a narrow cut on the ICW at around 50mph, took another boat out killing 3 or four and is now serving 65 years....

Just looked at the story once more, 56 year old property developer out on a cigeratte, crashed into a 31 ft Tiara killing the six on board, charged with mansluater and did not get 65 years like I said, he got 85

There was a similar incident on Lake Lanier, Atlanta, some years back. Drunks in a 40fter running fast at night ran over a wedding party drifting on the lake in a boat with no lights. Killed the lot.

Both culpable then. They should have been showing lights.

If you parked in the middle of a motorway at night, you'd be held responsible if you were hit.

interestingly one suspects that they were not considered the guilty party, and worse, they may have been equally under the influence.
A byplay on a well know byline
group of people on a drifting boat, whose the skipper? The teetotaller........

Interesting. For my sins, I lived on ( as in walk onto the pontoon in garden) on Lake Norman, NC a few years ago. My standard 'quip' on a Monday morning was how many 'boaters' I had entertained in the loungs as drive-in guests on the weekend ( in style of Reggie Perrin etc.).

Reason, all the bible-thumpers seemed to get slaughtered on their boats, yet were reasonably abstemious (speling?) rest of the time.

Maybe just a NCarolina issue.
