SAE 90-140 oil

I just went down this rabbit hole. Per Lofrans directly, they say anything SAE90 to SAE 140 is fine. Doesnt matter if its GL4 or GL5. I gave them some examples (below) and any should work...

  1. Quicksilver Extreme Pressure GL-4 SAE90: Amazon.com
  2. STAR BRITE Hypoid 90W GL-5: Amazon.com
  3. Lucas Oil SAE 85W-140 Gear Oil GL-5: Amazon.com
  4. Valvoline High Performance SAE 85W-140 Gear Oil Differential GL-5 / Non-Synchronized Manual Transmission GL-4: Amazon.com
Imtra said the same basically that its just a simple gear leg and any 90w at an automotive shop is fine and also said just go with the Lucas.

So I guess summary is don't overthink it..

There is a "story" that some GL5 lubes are incompatible with yellow metals, as might be found in, for example, manual transmissions, for which you should use GL4 (though it probably isn't really much of an issue at ambient temperatures).

Got the usual Taiwan Technical blank when enquiring about GL4, which seems unobtainable here, but eventually smuggled some manual BP transmission lube back from Okinawa, which I never put in and will probably end up recycling sometime this week. Sad.

Any yellow metal in your winch?
