Hi,
I was out sailing last week and the arch on the port side genoa car where the shackle on the block is attachs broke through. On inspection, there was a considerable amount of wear on the metal arch. There is also similar wear on the starboard side genoa car so I will have to replace the two.

Questions are
Does anyone know where I can source the original cars (these are the ones where a shackle attaches a No 2 Lewmar block to a metal arch on the front end of the block. They are held upright by a large spring wrapped around the shackle.)
If I need to get a different car, what is the track dimension. (I will measure it myself but I wanted to check if there were different types of track).
If I need to get a new type, what one would people recommend and what level of breaking strain would they recommend?

I posteed this on the Sadlers website also. All help gratefully received.

regards

David

to get new car dimensions, you need three measurements, width of track, depth of the side flange of the T, and diameter of the hole in the track for the stop. I had to replace a genoa car designed in a similar manner to yours (but made by Main), and was eventually able to get the correct width of track and diameter of the hole. The depth of the T was larger, thus initially my new cars would not fit, but Barton provided new inserts which fitted the old track and enabled the new cars to be used.

A word of caution. My new cars were lower profile than their predecessors, and ended up putting a lot more strain on the turning block cause the angle was wrong. This eventually caused the turning block to distort (just possibly cause I had too much sail up in the Round the Island!), and I had to redesign the strongback that held the turning block.
