Need a bigger boat (bigger family- If I don't do it now, the ca$h will get eaten up).

Need bilge keels, max draft about 4ft, max length 32ft.
Otherwise I lose my access to layup/mooring at 160 of our Great British pounds on a per annum basis.

Sadler 32 bilge keel?
Sadler 29 bk?
Moody 31 bk?

Any ideas. Budget 25kish, squeeze a few more at a push, but would rather not. Looked at a Sadler 29 in Bangor, but scared off by surveyors report of extensive water ingress to core and indication of previous damage.

Comments, even ribald, most welcome especially from Sadler 32 owners as this is my favoured choice. There are Moodys out there at the top end of our budget, but not many.

Regards, G

We had a Sadler 32, fin not BK, & they are great boats; v seaworthy and sail well. PBO - I think - compared fin vs BK using a S32 & the main difference was poorer pointing ability of the BK - about 5-10 degrees IIRR.
Interior is a bit cramped by todays standards but we managed 6-up family holidays when the kids were smaller. Lack of privacy was main reason we changed for boat w aft cabin too.
Never dreamed of looking at a Moody as we wanted a boat that sailed well....
Also looked at S29 - v little different from S32 except "chopped off" stern & transom rudder so I would go for the longer boat that will probably sail better.

Not sure why BAtoo has such a downer on Moodys. My son has a Contessa 32 and reckons my Moody 31 sails very well. So do I - and it has good accommodation, is easy to handle and is no slouch. Worth a look at but your budget may be a bit tight for one in good nick with fresh water cooling, hot water, up to date electronics and not needing another few grand spent on it.

If you could stretch the mooring to 33 feet how about a older Moody 33. Loads of room and a separate aft cabin for the kids.

Yup, loads of space but sails like an elderly Labrador.

(3reefs ducks and runs for cover)

Looking at the Byron site for handicaps etc the following info is given.
Twin k Sadler32 H'cap 1045 Disp hull speed 6.56 kn
Twin k Moody31 H'cap 1065 Disp hull speed 6.76 kn
The Sadler is marginally faster, but the Moody has a marginally greater disp speed.
As a fin keel Moody owner & having sailed a Sadler, the Moody has more space inside,& the Sadler can be wetter upwind in a blow.
I am biased of course, but both are seaworthy boats

We had a M31 Mk2 with bilge keels and in mast furling main - so you would thingk the worst combo for sailiung perfomace. Ok, not he best to point, but had 7knts out of her fairly frequently and the accomodation is more than comfy for a family of 4 on long summer hols and 6 for a weekend.

We changed to the M31 from a Sadler 29 and the improvement was immense. Can't comment on the Sadler 32, but the 29 is no comparison.

Stretch can't be done. Club discussions about size limits have raged for some time. There has been one shallow fin sadler 32 there before, dso the precedent is set. However, 33 is just going the next step, & I don;t want to do that. I agree with our size limit policy - its a SMALL muddy creek.

Interesting comment about the difference between a Moody 31 & Sadler 29. The Sadler 32 is apparently very similar to the sadler 29 internally - most of the difference is at the stern (so I'm told). Therefore the Moody 31 is likely to be more spacious than the Sadler 32 also.... off to Southampton methinks...

was that improvement on conformt or sailing performance as well ?
I am looking to change my sadler 29 twin keel but was told the moody 31 would not sail as well as the sadler

How about Westerlies. <snip> Merlin? <SNIP>All good sailors in bilge keel format.

I think the budget might be a bit tight. Would you really get a decent Moody 31 for 25K for example?

A Westerley Merlin bk a good sailer? You are having a laugh... I chartered one, years back, sails were OK, but the only way it went upwind was with the engine on. 3knots in a force 4, about 20 deg of leeway if you tried the proper way. Put me off b/k for life.
