Can anybody please advise on the fitting and rebedding of the forehatch on a Sadler 26? Mine dates from 1987 and is now rather crazed and the aluminium frame rather corroded but remains serviceable. The original appears to have been bedded using some black sealant of some type (although this may have been after construction) and when it gets hot in the sun some gloopy stuff drips out. I have tried to find out how these things were installed but without success. In the same area I would like to find a suitable retro-fit roller blind for the same hatch – any advice?

It is very common for hatches and windows to be sealed with a cured silicone mastic. When my windows were rebuilt by a specialist company in Athens they used it and supplied the two-part sealant for reattachment into the boat. My forehatch sealant looks very similar.

I think the fore hatch on the Sadler 26 is similar to that on the Sadler 25 (Houdini), The Houdini fore hatch on my 25 was iny the sound of it in a similar poor condition so I replaced it with a new one, The instructions that came with the hatch advised the use of a non setting butyl type sealant as opposed to a silicon sealant.

Earlier 26's had a CANPA hatch where the outer frame looks like fillled grey grp with a fine texture and have a well rounded edge .Later boats may have original or replacement aluminium hatches though,Network show both in their useful photos.
It is not difficult to rebed using Arbosil GZ preformed mastic butyl tape 12mmX3mm and to then repoint the perimeter gap using Arbosil 1081 BLACK.One tube will be more than enough for one hatch.
Scalpels useful to cut out the existing. You can trim the face 1081 sealant flush after it has gone off unless you are an artist.

There are a number of window/hatch renovation firms that you can buy materials from or you can get the sealants direct from e.g. Construction Sealants.
