Sadler 26 Cockpit "Cave" Lockers

Hi all,

Hoping for some help or guidance. On my recently purchased Sadler 26 there are oval scribed marks on the cockpit sides where I have seen storage shelves/cuddies/lockers whatever they're called installed on other boats. I have heard them described as "caves" I think.

A fellow forumite has a photograph of the type of thing on his website (thanks!):o

The boat is a South African completed version and these were obviously never fitted originally.

Does anyone know where I can source such a thing? They don't have to be the Sadler originals but something similar would be good.

I'd imagine they'd be relatively easy to fit. Just a good handful of SS self tappers and a splodge of Sikaflex. :D

Cockpit Caves

I may be wrong but I am sure if you cut out the oval holes then the 'Inside' is already there being the inside of the deck moulding. On all the other boats I have seen, including mine then the edges are covered up by the use of a moulded rubber strip which you can buy easily from http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk Rubber U section
 
Remember Highlander isn't double skinned / unsinkable like the UK Sadler 26's ... and so doesn't have some of the internal moldings that may form cave lockers etc.

How has that Lombardi engine worked out for you? I know it had been laid up for some time?

Fastjedi. I'm intrigued. You seem to know a lot about my boat, but from your profile I can't work out why.

You're right Highlander isn't foam filled (and hence "unsinkable") but most of the usual moldings are present from what I can tell. Not convinced that the cave lockers are though. (They seem like an additional molding to me even on UK Sadlers).

Who are you? and what else if anything can you tell me about the boat's history? pm me if you'd rather.

PS the engine started first time after about 10 secs of cranking and has done ever since. Now runs very sweetly after a thorough service although the oil seals on the saildrive leg are weeping. (gonna replace them shortly).

The photo looks like a complete grp moulding which is just screwed into the coaming. If the 'inside' is not there, you can buy a complete 'cave' from someone who advertises in the back of PBO - Sheraton Marine Cabinet, this includes the teak trim and the inner.

Is "cave" the correct word for it? Am I likely to find a supplier at the boat show that I can talk to?

I don't know wether you'll find Sheraton at the Boat Show, I've used them once in the past and I dealt direct with them. I considered the Sheraton lockers for my boat but thought they were expensive, especially as I already have an oval teak trim in my shed and just need the plastic/grp interior - I'm thinking about moulding one in grp over the winter.

I'm glad you said that as I was thinking the same thing myself. I know this is the mad mad world of boating where everything is marked up to the max but £45 for a plastic bowl and a bit of teak seems a bit on the high side.

I'm sure there must be other suppliers slightly cheaper.
 
I am still telling ya that there aint no special moulding in the standard Sadler cockpit side lockers and that the edges are black rubber protrusions. I got one, so I know.

I wasn't disbelieving you for one moment, it's just that I am aware of some slight discrepancies between my boat and the standard UK production models.

As fastjedi says, (I still don't know how he knows though:confused:) Higlander doesn't necessarily have all of the internal mouldings that may make up this sort of thing.

Before I start chopping into the sides of the cockpit I think an couple of minutes laying on my back in the lazarette with a torch might be in order. Do you think I will be able to see if the necessary moulding is in there by doing that?

If you have a photo showing yours (even in the background) I'd really appreciate it if you could post it or PM me?

All due respect to others on here who have responded, but your question is most likely beyond standard UK knowledge SO

Speak to Andy Middleton who once worked for Sadlers and after their demise purchased their Sadler 25 moulds and can still provide spares for S25's and 26's and more importantly knows the boats inside out.

He is a mine of information and may well save you stress - he's also a very nice chap, so pick up the phone!!

Good for you, just for the record he built the VERY last Sadler 25 from the aforesaid moulds in about 1999 ( in spite of what you might read elsewhere- I know 'cos I nearly bought it and it looked wonderful)- he could still build more of course but the world and costs move on so probably not viable
