Sad story of the lose of a boat

Luckily for this boat there were people listening to an established marine frequency and a rescue happened quicker than a coastguard could get a ship there, plus every 2 hours catchups between the 2 boats over SSB as the rescue unfolded. Both would be ideal but as shown in this case Ham/ssb is not dead and as a different animal from picking up the phone, has many advantages on an offshore boat.

On the other hand, the British boat got there at more or less the same time, and was not contactable by SSB. I can see that having both would be a good idea.

I didn't get the thing about "barnacles were reducing our progress" either, but not many of us know how we would react in such a stressful situation.

Also, can you really check your hull to deck joint easily? On many boats it's hidden behind cabinetry or other internal panels. Condition of the rudder and the security of the mountings seems to have been a significant additional factor in the end result.
