The Navy will announce, according to the BBC, that all of the Frigates and destroyers will be moved from Plymouth to Portsmouth... leaving Plymouth with the Dockyard Re-fit work and the Amphibs.... (And the subs maybe??)....

Story here...

It will be sad to no longer be able to see the fighting ships coming and going.. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Have they considered the military implications of the entire Sunsail fleet sinking and blockading Pompey? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I just hope all that skilled labour can find suitable work which makes good use of their training and experience. Plymouth has a rich and proud naval and marine heritage building, testing and repairing real ships. At the moment we do not need any more aspiring estate agents or insurance salesmen.

On local radio they said that they expected the subs to be moving to Scotland, and they hoped to move enviromental industry into the area.

Agreed - the subs would go to Faslane I assume. Strategically this ranks as the most stupid move since the Army wore red coats and charged an enemy that had rifles. One bomb could remove our ability to refit any of our remaining navel vessels. Bizarre.

We still got Falmouth Docks, and even Mylor Dock yard is still there, the grid is only buried under the car park.

What future is there, bar looking after visitors as servants down here.

Brian

Best thing the Navy ever did was to leave Portland. We have now got a quality Sailing Centre and a first class marina. Jo public is able to use the excellent sport facilities built with taxpayers money. The wardroom and the PO'S Mess are being converted into luxury flats. The docks are being used by commercial vessels engaged in the act of trade bringing real wealth into the economy.

The news here today was showing a smug politician who is on the select comittee who just happens to be a Portsmouth man , No wonder the work goes there . As for the Submarine work, what a farcical waste of money building that huge sub basin in Devonport when all the subs go to Faslane (or was that just scottish politicians taking back handers ?)

How anyone but an accountant could think that this makes sense is beyond me but nof course one should expect nothing less of this government, who really do actively hate the South West, fo reasons I have never quite understood.

I don't think Plymouth needs any more "luxury" flats at the moment.

As others have said, a blow below the belt for the SW.

If (and its a big if) it happens it won't be for a few years at least. BBC reporting speculation - surely not! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

How does that make any sense? I could simply reverse the thought process and phrasing for any project that goes to England, that I don't see the logic to, (not being in possession of ALL the facts) and suggest that some english politician took a backhander!
The only reason I don't type one out as an example is because I wouldn't want MY ass sued off. Unlike you, who seem remarkably unafraid of whatever politician(s) you have publically, in writing, implied a MAJOR slur on.

Dear House of Commons Select Committee...

Be interesting to see what happens if Scottish independence comes along. Will they get to keep the subs, or demand the withdrawal of the Imperialist (slightly less great) British Navy?

A blow below the belt for the SW and, sadly, a sign of things to come.

GET to keep them!?

I live about 20 miles from Faslane and I don't see any benefit from their presence - except perhaps that in a pre-emptive strike on the UK I'm likely to die quicker and in less pain than the rest of you as they take out Faslane, Coulport and Glen Douglas.

Good news - you'll volunteer to explain to the several thousand civilian workers at faslane etc that losing their jobs is Ok because it suits you!
