So why has the lock keeper at Cleeve been sacked then ? Why aint you guys kicking off about it ? I know if my local lockies ( Sunbury and Hampton court ) got the sack i would be kicking off big time about it !

Why would anyone with a house to lose do something silly enough to get sacked ? Are the EA finding any reason to sack the lock keepers no matter how minor the action . Maybe he had been late too many times so they had to sack him . And of course free up another lock house for sale

Without knowing anything of the background or reason? Hardly rational!

This is Laurence with the monster motorbike, yes? In which case no, he is a relief who can only dream of getting a lock of his own. He did mention wanting to put his hat in the ring for the Cleeve vacancy when I saw him recently though so who knows, he might end up there.

Thats not Lawrence is it ??

No it's (or was) Ian.

To some extent it's a pity as he is a "character" which make the river such a pleasure for those who engage with the lockies on their journeys.

The grapevine has it that he went just a bit too far this time (there have been many incidents over the time that he had been at Cleeve).

From the outside it seems such a silly thing to do, free accommodation and presumably a public sector pension when you retire.

However, I sense a growing frustration with the current management, seemingly silly dictats, illogical rules, and a clear lack of understanding of how the river works.

Ian is the second lockie to go this year, the other resigned in frustration. Both were great characters, but perhaps too independent for a huge organisation such as the EA.

I for one will miss them both, and hope when EA finally get around to fill the vacancies, that the new incumbents will add some value to the scene.

I agree with you.

I take it from the best not discussed here comments that the lock keeper agrees he should have been sacked ?

Unles the discussion would hinder any case against his dismissal, or he agrees with the reasons for his dismissal, what is a "forum " for if not to discuss issues on the Thames, perhaps the lockie could make his case known and possible recieve support if it is waranted

Completely agree. Unless a lock keeper chooses to discuss his employment or lack thereof on here, why are we even discussing it? Not every HR matter in the EA is necessarily related to us as licence fee payers.

Oh dear, did I just agree with No Regrets.....??

just a thought

Impossible to support when you dont know the reasoning behind it and he has not requested any support. It is not easy to sack someone in the UK these days, generally unless it is a point of pincipal it is easier to pay someone off even if the reason justifies the action rather than pay lawyers fees and spending time with appeals and hearings.

I feel for anyone losing their job in the current climate especially if attached to their home but have to agree that this is not our business until someone involved asks for support and is willing/able to present all the facts.

In response to a previous suggestion, and not with regard to this case:

I care about any decent lockie being treated unfairly.

I also care about the EA being treated unfairly.

'Fair' is a double edged sword. This case is not, at this moment, and IMHO, any business of ours though guys!!

In other words you will wait to see what your mates have to say about it before you decide what to do
Sorry chaps but i think this is a case of the EA pushing an outspoken lock keeper out and telling me to leave it wont work cause i dont really wanna be in your gang :D
Im more interested in why a lock keeper has lost his house and job than looking good on the internet !

I think current employment law would protect any employee beyond any reasonable doubt!

Have you seen how hard it is to get rid of somebody short of gross negligence or proven theft?

I am not sure I understand your post at all Cuchilo. What in my response indicates to you that I am waiting to see "what my mates say about it" never did that in the playground and have always made my own decisions about what I will or will not doin life.

From your post you do not seem to have any more facts than anyone here. Unless you have spoken to him or perhaps know more than you have said? You also appear to have decided that its the EA's fault and a vindictive move on their part. There has been no request or comment to my knowledge from the individual concerned. Perhaps he does not want support or involvement from the forum.

I could careless about "looking good on the internet" but without a request, facts or knowledge you appear to be asking us to "kick off" and get involved in something that we know nothing about.

You can get as involved as you want, as an individual that is your choice, albeit imho without any real knowledge I am unsure what you are trying to achieve.
