Sacked 11/11/ @ 11.00 Hrs

You put it much better than I could.

I'm not 80 yet but I remember the war and the bombing in the 2nd World War although a bit too young for the armed forces.

I dont usually become involved in this sort of forum debate but I was fairly suprised to see your reply.

I suggest a visit to Great War battle fields or the D-Day beaches.. If you can't be bothered, just hang around a war menorial for 5 minutes and read the names of some of the young guys who died to ensure your right to freedom.

I rather feel we forgive and forget just a little to quickly. I recently read a novel titled 'Fatherland' which was set in post war Europe after the Germans had won the 39-45 war...Ok just a novel, but the world could have been a very different place if these ordinary men had not held the line.

Unfortunatly, if we followed your suggestion there would be very quickly be some despot willing to enslave the rest of the world.

Having been involved until last week with aviation ground handling I would say that it would be pretty impossable for these guys to be sacked for such a trivial matter. Howver if their employers were either Ground Star or Swissport any thing could happen!

I am reminded of Jack Nicholson's Colonel character's courtroom speech in 'A Few Good Men':

"Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: That Santiago's death, while tragic, saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

You don't want the truth, because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. We use words like honour, code, loyalty, we use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use 'em as a punchline.

I have neither the time or the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it. I'd prefer it if you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post.

Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to."

Surely an urban myth

I've just checked on the "wires" to see if this story is corroborated by any single news source but there is no mention of it
It could possibly be mixed with this story though, which comes a no real suprise.;

I don't have to be 80 to remember your Tony starting a war just last year. And as far as I know, it's still going on, if I can believe the massacres on my screen every day. You can only hope the Iraqis don't invade your country back - or worse. It is, after all, what happened to Hitler when he invaded without being attacked.

I'm British and proud of it, but he's NOT my Tony. Not bl--dy likely. He's a confirmed bender of the truth who appears to think himself as President and is leader of a party who's MPs are only concerned with their excessive salaries and expenses.
