Morning all, im currently in search of a water injector exhaust bend for a sabb GG, would anyone have one going if you glare stripping an old engine? Or know where to get one? I have emailed Sleeman Hawkins as first port of call, boat is now currently in Dartmouth and not moving until I replace this next

You could have one made up for you. It doesn't have to be identical, just fit the engine outlet and the hoses, and do the job.

I think a number of people on the forum have have them made or knocked one up themselves.

For more modern/popular engines you'll find copies/substitutes online, but I doubt you'd find one for a Sabb these days.

I had an aluminium one go on a perkins,at the time I was unable to find a replacement so I made one out of mild steel and a standard galvanised bend.

Welded a newly made flange and other pipes and it was fine until I eventually found the correct replacement. It's simple to do, you could take your original to a car exhaust specialist ans they will possibly make one for you

Marvellous thank you…. I clearly should’ve removed the part / measured it before going on a hunt for the part and leaving th boat at the harbour 🤦‍♂️😂

Some people have made up exhaust elbows from standard pipe fittings (if you search for e.g. YBW exhaust elbow you might find posts about them.).

The challenging bit, as far as I can make out from an accounts on here (I've not done it myself), is the end that fits onto the motor. You might be able to salvage that part of the existing elbow and either connect standard pipe fittings to it, or pay someone to weld a suitable elbow and injector fitting onto it. (This could be a local engineering/welding shop, or might be worth checking out the people offering 'pattern'repalcement exhaust elbows online (I believe there are some on ebay).

Some engine manufacturers' elbows have a concentric inner pipe, the exhaust flows through the inside of that and the cooling water is introduced outside of that before mixing with the exhaust at the termination of the inner pipe. From comments on this forum it seems that degree of sophistication is necessary, and a simple inlet for the cooling water is sufficient.

As I say, I have not done this myself, but have taken an interest as last time I looked the manufacturer's exhaust elbow for my engine is priced something like £450!

Problem with the one I had the flange was also rotten aluminium.
I used it as a pattern and cut one with a mini grinder in mild steel then bought a standard bend (not elbow) and welded it on ,then cut a short pipe and fitted that for the water. Took about 2 hours. Probably out live the engine.

Aye that’s the same as what I’ve received from other forums, there are a few similar parts online cheaper than the £360 for the actual piece - but I would have to re-do my copper pipe looking at it…. I’ll to try and find the dimensions online or pull the part off the boat at the weekend, the manual does say stainless steel is best but can use rubber pipe - no idea how that would go down mind 🙈

I have space inside - see attached

£11 is certainly better than £450

That flange looks like steel, so it looks possible to re use and just get a bend welded on. Just make sure the smaller pipe (water?) enters at a the downward angle as the existing...

You can only use rubber pipe (specialist exhaust hose) after the elbow where water is introduced, as far as I am aware. The water cools the exhaust gasses very considerably (from hundreds of degrees C to about 50, if I remember correctly). I am pretty sure that rubber exhaust hose will not survive for long with uncooled exhaust gasses going through it.

The old water injector elbow had a copper pipe connectected at the bend… I have now
Replaced with a new elbow and a rubber hose at near the top end and the temp is sitting at a nice 80 degrees
Unless on fill
Power then it runs at 90… on her first trip for 12 hours was on engine as no wind… and now failing to start again… any ideas? 🤦‍♂️ one thing after the next with this engine but she has done so well already!!
