Hi everyone, I need some information, I have a need to replace my 10hp Saab engine, does anyone know who can replace it or re-build my one. I would like it re-built as it is such a good powerful work horse although a little noisy compared with newer engines, I'm in the Poole/Christchurch area.

The uk Agents are below.

UK Sleeman and Hawken Broadmeadow Industrial Estate

Personally I replaced my old 10hp Sabb single pot with a Beta 10, twin pot. Much better consumption, less noise & vibration, and spares widely available. (not that I have needed any, but just in case.)

There's a lot of marine diesel engineers out there that still know the Sabb diesels very well. I do have an address somewhere around the Solent / Chichester that the previous owner used to do an excellent top-end job on mine a few years ago. I'll try to find the details. What's wrong with yours exactly?

Unfortunately it needs a complete overhaul, it has a nasty knock from the bottom end, but it has been there for years. I have had the boat for 13 years now, and as I said, they are an amazingly strong engine and give a lot of confidence when it's needed. I did put a new head on it about five years ago as it wasnt starting to good and found the head cracked. One thing I do like about it is the hand start, call me old fashioned but i still think a boat engine needs a hand start available. So any information you can pass on will be gratefully received.

You may have to ship the engine to Sleeman Hawken in Teignmouth for a re-build, but if it's just a big-end bearing, any diesel fitter should be able to do it, and maybe with the engine in place (through the side panel) if access allows. The Sabb engines were were designed as a workhorse for Norwegian inshore fishing boats and to be repaired easily with minimum fuss and tools. The person who did the head on mine was John Cutler in Emsworth. Tel. 01243 375014. You might want to have a word with him also.

I had a Sabb 10hp on a boat a few years back and dispite all that is said about them i hated it!

Even after spending a lot of time and money and employing all the tricks it still was a terrible starter.

The good thing tho was that the big end was accessable via a removeable plate on the side of the crankcase.

One last thing to check if you havnt is that the exhust is not blocked with clag...mine had rused away and combined with the coke from the exhaust gasses had left it with no room to breath.

I had mine sorted and a new exhust made ( couldnt get a genuine spare) at Cutlers in Emsworth but it cost a grand and wasnt worth it!

Suppose it could be a big end knock but I believe Sabb 10 has roller bearings for both big end and main bearings (that's why it has no oil pump and is just splash lubricated) so don't know how easy to change. I think the panel on side of engine is just to allow the con rod to be split and to withdraw the piston.

Checked the manual today. A big end bearing replacement does need the flywheel to be split on the 10hp. On my 8HP it's different, using whitemetal shells which separate with the bearing cap. So if it is the big end, the engine will have to come out.
