S&S She 31b - stem head fitting

I've recently purchased a She 31b and an currently refitting her with a transatlantic passage in mind.

I've just noticed a piece of broken off aluminum in the anchor well. I need to investigate further but it looks as though it may support the stem head fitting.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me how the stem heads were fitted on this design?

I am surprised that your 31 has an anchor well, as I didn't think any were built that way. Is yours a modification from the original? If so, the support is likely to be non-standard. On the Traveller version that I once owned, the stem-head fitting was attached in a straightforward way to the hull and deck by SS fasteners. Although I can't remember the exact detail, there was certainly no aluminium bracing. The deck is balsa cored, so needs care with mods.

Doesn't look to me as if there has been any modification. I think the 31b is different to the traveller.

I'm quite well aware of the differences between the Traveller and the 31B and the addition of an anchor well isn't one of them. If your boat was built that way by South Hants Engineering, then IMO, it is a very unusual example. In fact, before my purchase of one, I clearly recall a YM review that said S&S avoided designing in a well as it was seen as a possible source of weakness of the structure. The S&S Owners Assn. might be a source of information as several members own 31's.
