What grease (or similar) should be used to prevent a S/S pin seizing in an alloy casting, for example in self-steering gear?

Since the problem will be from electrolytic corrosion of the alloy, a simple answer is to clean the crud out then coat the s/s pin with a barium chromate paste such as Duralac. The paste sets but not so hard as to give any problem if you need to extract a pin or machine screw. A tubeful will provide you with about a lifetime's supply for all jobs where s/s fixings are going into masts and spars as well as your immediate job.

I agree with the suggestion to use a chromate paste such as Duralac

Some people say that Tef-Gel is better. A ptfe based paste which effectively fills all the voids and excludes water.

Neither of these suggestions is appropriate for something where movement normally occurs such as on a a pivot pin. Only a for static joints

Thanks Fellas

Duralac.....that was the name of the stuff that I was trying to remember...

These senior moments are becoming more frequent !!!

When I fitted my Windpilot the manual suggested that the best long-term seizure avoidance with their stainless steel pins in aluminium forgings was obtained by lanolin. After several years of ownership I had to agree that nothing had seized.
