I am dismantling an old seized windlass that was kindly donated to me, in anticipation of servicing the real thing on the boat. [I know that servicing doesn't require such a major stripdown - this is more for awareness].

I cannot remove the shaft from the gear wheel in either direction. As soon as the end of the key (both ends visible in the photograph) disappears into the gear/bearing area, the shaft stops moving further. The shaft stops whichever direction it moves. The key is shown as separable in the exploded parts diagram. Has anybody been here before? Does the shaft come out? Is there a trick to it?

Any advice welcome. As the unit has been written off, there is no problem in using the 'bigger hammer' approach.

Cheers
Bob
