The boat I have just bought has one, sitting on the foredeck, frozen solid.

The chain is manky and will be scrapped. It looks as if it may have been 3/8" when it was young.

I am quite comfortable with manual windlasses and the 555 has a reasonably good reputation, but I recall that S-L made their own chain and modern chain may not be compatible with the gypsy.

Scrap or rebuild?

I have a SL seawolf with original gypsy and odd-sized chain (which I am also going to have to scrap) which John said may have been old chain manufactured specifically for SL, but he had some useful suggestions - one option is to get new gypsy and more common modern chain size - he seems to know his stuff for sure when it comes to SL

I have an SL Seatiger (555) which I am taking to pieces at the mo.

It's good old fashioned engineering, almost like a Series LandRover. If I can fix it, anyone can !

Have you got the service manual ?

Some useful info on Youtube
