Agree whole heartedly, the problem is a general objection in the UK to this behaviour. Why, if I buy drinks for my brood what is the problem ? If you go anywhere in europe or even the far east if you have yourown food but buy something in the cafe/restaurant/bar they will gladly serve you even often give you plates. The problem is one of a total lack of service ethic in the UK. Don't get me wrong I am British and glad of it butI am sick of the petty attitude of so many folk about such matters. As a member of RYA if I had attended said 'Lounge' and been treated with such contempt I would have been most aggrieved. I would have been tempted to have a verbal pop at the twonk of the 'Royal Southampton ..whatever He is obviously a most sad individual with an over inflated opinion of himself and his bally club. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I had a look at the constitution and it appears we can elect members to the council. So who on this forum would like to stand ?......We could run the RYA for the benefit of ordinary people who like boats!!

[/ QUOTE ] Michael, this misses a very important point. The anti-RYA views expressed in this thread are nothing new yet the council do nothing whatsoever to change the organisation or deal with the issues that people are unhappy about. They do nothing yet they MUST know all about the discontent from surveys and even from casual bar-talk. There is no way that this comfy little group of highly-paid staff are going to budge until someone gives them a good hard kick, where it most needs to be given.

I fear that becoming a council member on their terms (restricted time, restricted terms of reference) is just going to be a frustrating, pointless and expensive waste of time for the person who puts their name forward.

Don't get me wrong. A few years ago we were cruising the south coast ,, tied up at Ocean Village and asked if we could have temporary facilities at the RSYC. They were exceedingly polite , helpful and extended every courtesy. The members |I got pxxxed with that evening were all wonderful characters and they paid for most of the beer!!

A question of spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar?

Ok - so I emailed the RYA via their 'feedback' section with the following.

As you are doubtless aware the YBW yachting forum is possibly the biggest in the world. I think others beside myself would like you to read this thread and comment.

I think amongst many ordinary sailing people the RYA sometimes seems arrogent and out of touch

So why does not every member of the forum who feels the same do the same.. Possible to move mountainas or depose people we do not approve of - if everybody wants it..

send the emal and post here that you have sent it - if you really think its worth the effort..

Michael

This comes down to the question of what the RYA members lounge actually for. I took it as being somewhere that members could go for a quiet sit down, buy the food provided if you want or eat your own if you want. If it's actually only an overpriced cafe like all the rest then what's the point?

Leaving aside the RYA, isn't it about time that the organisers of these boat shows provided picnic areas where people can have their own snacks and a drink, and sit down, without paying around £3 for a hot dog?

Maybe the RYA could take that up with the organisers, on behalf of ordinary sailors /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm a mean 'b-----d' /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, but found the food/drink at the RYA lounge was priced reasonably.

Also the staff of RSYC, who including the counter helpers & waitresses, were extremely friendly, more so than some on the main RYA stand, who rarely had welcoming smiles.
