On a couple of other threads I've seen other former group leaders on this scheme mention how good it was but don't think we've ever had a thread on it so here goes. Did you do it in any sense? any stories?

My 2p.

I was a GL on the solent fleet and to award the competent crew certificate we had to sail with all the different people which meant swapping boats round a bit.
One cruise we did as a university sailing club and had the entire solent flotilla to ourselves and of course we all knew each other well before going. One day whilst having swapped from "my" boat to another the usual informal race had developed with beer on the result ( losing boat buys) . We were sailing from Poole to Studland and were gaining on "my" boat. SWMBO ( who then was my girlfriend) disappeared down below and emerged with a clean pair of my boxers, swing them round and threatening to throw them if we overtook. Approaching the buoy we had decided was the finish and were level so SWMBO then launches boxers overboard. Cue much laughing on both boats.

The crew on my host boat were reluctant to do a pants overboard and lose the beer but we did alter course for a couple of seconds in response to my "get my pants" call before the helm replied "sod that" and swung back on course. We lost about 1/2 a boat length and lost the race by maybe 2 yards.

For days afterwards we had visions of a large ship being disabled and polluting miles of sea all because my pants got sucked into a coolant intake and jammed. Don't believe it happened though.

SO any other GLs or other YSS skippers want to admit their sins?

Just wondering if there are still training schemes aimed at young sailors to get RYA qualified as skipper.
Seams like a good idea.

It would never pass the elf n safety brigade now.

I think the RYA has changed as well. When I qualified in the late 80's it seemed more about adventure training with many of the people from a military / outward bound type background.
