Afternoon,

Sorry, not really sure where in the forum this should live.

I’m presently going through the Day Skipper Theory and hopefully soon Practical. I’m aware that because I’m doing the exam online it cannot be commercially endorsed, which is fine right now.

After I’ve got the miles under my keel I’d potentially like to get Yachtmaster and I may want to commercially endorse that. Does the Yachtmaster overrule the day skipper theory or would I have to do the theory again in person?

Thanks

The Yachtmaster is an exam carried-out by a DoT examiner. I think you need to do your coastal skipper theory first (but I may be wrong).

To commercial endorse your Yachtmaster, you need to have a medical (GP can do the form), and you need to do a sea survival course (which you should do anyway because it's arguably the most fun and interesting of all the courses).

The following link on invigilation during online theory exams maybe helpful, I think it only matters for work on larger ships, and so an online theory exam (without invigilation) is fine for commercial endorsement in many scenarios:

We Are Navathome, The RYA Online Theory Training Course Provider

The examiner during the yachtmaster practical exam will of course test many areas of your theory, including navigation and colregs.

Also worth mentioning that there's a more detailed theory exam for yachtmaster anyway.

Thanks, that helps.

I'm afraid you are wrong, you don't need a theory cert, but, your theory knowledge needs to be at (or better above) that level when you take the exam - the examiner will ask questions... You do need a VHF cert and a current first aid cert to take the exam.

To answer the OPs question, yes, if you pass the Yacht master exam (either coastal or offshore) you can get a commercial endorsement without needing a theory cert. As others have mentioned, you do need medical, and also sea survival and the PPR course for the commercial endorsement.
