RYA \'Question Time\'

As an add on from Powerskipper's post - When I did my 'tickets' there was a book in which candidates were encouraged to put any questions they could remember from both the written and oral exams. This was an invaluable source of information on what to expect, and several of the questions were repeated in subsequent papers.
Perhaps another 'forum' could be set up for RYA questions? - and answers, of course.

Not really a lot of point. I could give you exam papers for the last few years but that wouldnt really help you learn so I wont.

I hope that doesnt sound too pious, but the real objective of the RYA lessons is to learn not to get tickets, which is why there is no general pass mark (colregs excepted), why attendance matters and why understanding demonstrated in the lessons matters too.

Anyway, all the nav changes this year with new charts, PNT and CD

It must be right that, as yo say its the understanding that matters noy just the passing of the exam. The point I take issue on is that surely attendance is not important in itse;f - providing its sufficient to demonstrate understanding that is. The exam itself is surely an attempt to measure understanding, so an exam with a verbal interview would surely be sufficient to demonstrate understanding.

So, I reckon a teacher should be able to assess the knowledge of a student by giving them a written exam and interviewing them. For some two terms of night school classes are painstaking and boring and really not needed.

Do you agree?

Im just doing Yachtmaster theory at the moment /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Had the col-regs exam a couple of weeks ago. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
i bought the RYA Navigation Exercises to give me more practice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
So, on the morning before the exam, i do the section on Col-regs in the exercise book. a lot more questions than the exam but i thought i would see if i knew me stuff. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Didnt half help. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Every question in the exam was in the exercise book. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
still didnt get 100 percent though /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Navigation exam soon, so i will do all the questions in the exercise book in case they are in the exam /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My YM instructor emphasised that the candidates task was to convince the examiner/tutor that he would be a safe skipper and be able to use the knowledge wisely and effectively. V hot on ColRegs and passage planning with weather plus safety.

I passed and was dead proud of doing so.

i get a real impression from my instructor that its not about getting the numbers exactly right.
the ability to follow the correct method seems to be quite important.
i still make silly cockups like reciprical bearing! quite obvious when you are doing it that you are heading the wrong way.
example during day skipper practical: leaving Felixstowe/Harwich. from languard i am about to tell the helm to steer course xxx deg to get us to Brightlingsea. ooops i think thats norf we need to go sarf.

Anyone like to buy some brand new RYA practice charts. goinng very cheap /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I bought a spare set as the ones in the classroom were getting a bit worn. ordered practice nav book and get a spare set with that as well /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

each time you add a totally new question you run the risk of difference of opinion. thats why the format stays so similar. bearings may change.tidal stream maybe a bit different... essentially its the same exercise with different numbers, different chart. And after a few years you end up with a set of questions that represents common issues in the real world. And some one can mark it. If you can pass that, you ve learned the technique. Knowing in advance the answer is 1.2m, you ve learned no useful skill at all.
maybe you mean its good to get some extra practice questions... but hell, you can make up your own. if you cant, dont bother with a passage plan! (legal obligations excepted blah blah...)
