RYA membership advantages

We’ve been members of the RYA for years, always mindful of the fact that they are a useful pressure organisation for our hobby, but the events last year in Belgium where the authorities decided to fine red diesel users made me wonder. What did the RYA do for those INDIVIDUALS. Not the pressure at National level, but the direct assistance to the victims.
In other words, when the chips are down, what are they going to do to help me?

Just paying for my winter mooring in Albufeira, 15% discount of 2500 euros not to be sneezed at. Wanted copies of our ICC and Radio cert a few months ago, certainly sir, in the post and arrived within a few days.

Agree, although our marina discount was only 6% it still paid a three times over our RYA membership, excellent value

Yes, same here.

But that isn't the only reason. I think it was Bill Cooper who said that the RYA was more like a Trade Union than a Club. No other country has such an effective organisation lobbying on behalf of boat owners over the years. Plus they do have a legal department which will provide advice to individual members with problems, or did so for me many years ago.

I guess it depends on whether you think it worthwhile to support an organisation which acts for us collectively - or whether you think the RYA has proved sufficiently effective in that role.

I'm always a bit cynical about 'discounts' from whatever source, since often they just get offset against whatever discount you already negotiated, or the discount is applied to RRP which almost nobody pays.

The discounts for accredited members (commercial endorsement and instructors) are pretty good, I just got an overboard waterproof duffel with 40% off which makes it very reasonable.
