Are any mobo'ers here, members of the RYA?

Do you find any benefit of being a member of the RYA, or is it mainly directed towards Raggies?

I have been a member for 11yrs now, and haven't seen any benefit from my Gold membership at all.

Just wondering if it worth renewing.

Whats your thoughts?

Cheers
Al.

Just keep my membership going for the ICC. Never seen any other benefit apart from the, occasional very sailing biased, magazine.

I am. I think the discounted rates on fast track processing of various certificates of competence paid for my membership for a couple of years at least.

Plus I think the RYA is, on balance, a force for good.

I'm waiting for someone to cut and paste their "what have the Romans done for me?" speech from the last time this came up in a thread :-) Was it L'Escargot? Can't remember

I first joined 30 years or so ago to obtain a preferential rate on a Lombard car loan and have never left. I've not really taken advantage of any further direct benefits since then except the inevitable training and certification things but tend to look on membership as showing support of the body that most closely represents my interests.

If you look at some of the issues the RYA has stuck to its guns on, such as red diesel, I think it has taken a very pro-motorboat stance in the face of opposition from other segments of its membership. No doubt some motorboaters will continue to fret about things like Olympic bias but reality is they get big grants to do that kind of thing whereas a lot of the things I care about, like keeping bits of the seabed available for my boat's anchor, would be pretty impossible to counter if there wasn't a body of members, somewhere, funding a balancing argument.

With any organisation like the RYA it's ever so easy to poke holes and perhaps I have done my share of grumbling about them over something or other over the years. But I don't see any realistic alternatives for representing the voice of UK motorboat owners based on the coast. Hence although I am less connected to the team there than in years past and don't have personal experience of how the new leadership team is doing following Rod Carr's influential and effective stint in charge I remain supportive of the aims and don't have plans to cancel the Direct Debit.

I decided not to rejoin, threw away the letter of renewal. Today had my new details through stupidly it's done automatically.

Won't make same mistake next yr.

Hi Kimmo hows it hanging
we sure do miss you (at times :D)

RYA membership = £40pa
Saving on fuel thanks to 60:40 rule = 20p/L
If you use more than 200L/year, the RYA has paid for itself.

Yes, I know you don't have to be a member to benefit from the 20p/litre "saving", but if it wasn't for the RYA we'd (almost) all be paying more.

And that is to say nothing of the many years in which the RYA successfully campaigned for the retention of red diesel.

The benefits for raggies, of course, are rather less obvious! :D

The RYA gets attention right up to ministerial level to represent boaters' interests. Aside from red diesel, they also fought e-borders and the daft drink boating laws. They may not always seem to be on the ball, but who else is there to represent our interests?

Other useful benefits are free ICCs, use of lounges at SIBS & LIBS, discounted goods, legal advice and service, and if you fancy a Volvo car you can get a lifetimes worth of RYA subscriptions from the member discounts - up to 17.5% off list.

What is to dislike? Less than a pound per week, all the goodies about ICC etc and also legal advice plus good advice about VAT etc. When I joined, I was looking for help with buying a boat, could not find a local club so joined RYA, still not got a local club.
I cannot understand why folk moan about it, must be human nature I guess:confused:

Yeah, thanks all. The difference being though, I don't have a boat at the moment, and it doesn't look likely I'll be getting one until this flamin recession is over!
But I do like to support the cause.

Cheers
Al.
