Many of you know me for the renovations I have been making to my Westerly Fulmar Concerto. Earlier this year at the WOA East Coast Fitting Out Lunch I gave a presentation with a photo presentation. It was very well received and I was asked if I would be prepared to do a longer presentation including questions and answers at the RYA London/South East Cruising/Racing Conference on Sunday 12 January at Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club, Eastbourne. Naturally I agreed as I like to inspire many to do work on their boats. The event is free to attend, provided you have registered. Hopefully some of you will attend and say hello.

A reminder about the conference. There are still a limited number of free places available. I was informed today I will be in the main conference room at the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club. My talk will include 67 PowerPoint slides and I will answer questions from the floor.

The talk is titled Renovation or Revellation, not my choice but the orgainisers. It is about how different Concerto, my Westerly Fulmar, looks after 5 years of work. It will be covering what she looked like when I purchased her and the progress to the current condition. My aim has been to get it as close to new condition inside and out, plus improve the safety, sail handling, and living aboard. Also includes some photos of her sailing. Dave, you should have noticed her moored close to the marina facilites on B4 and seen she is not some tatty old boat, but shines. Many of the photos I will be using are in the photo file on the Westerly Owners web site. Judge for yourself. - Roger Clark

Hi Concerto,
I have just looked through your presentation and I would like to say congratulations on a very nice refit job, you must be very proud of your fine vessel. I am in the middle of a big refit myself and know how much work you have put in.

Concerto is still not finished, but I am pleased that I am now on the finishing run. My aim has always been to try and get as close to new condition as possible. All the work has been for my benefit and do not expect to sell her in under 10 years, so I get the full benefit rather than another owner. In a couple of years I expect to sail round Britian single handed, to include the Shetlands and Orkneys. There are still a few minor changes I will make to improve her like fitting two hand holds in the loo compartment as on starboard tack in rough weather it can be difficult to get off the loo. I know I will never get the money I paid for the improvements, but providing I keep her looking good, she will always sell quickly as the condition and specification will be make her one the best in class. You cannot put a price on the pleasure I get from sailing a well presented yacht and the comments I get from people on newer yachts - some who even learnt to sail on a Fulmar.
